Just as a bit of Silly Season fun, we've made a new map on the site which we're calling "Mapology".
It lists everywhere where we cover in the region. You click on an icon and you get a pop-up with the place name, a photo and links to the Travelfish page for that destination (and to Agoda and Booking.com if available for that destination).
We mark capitals, national parks and islands with different markers (this isn't 100% comprehensive, but we're working on it) and we'r ...
I am arriving in bangkok on the 20th of october next year, and have set up a itenerary (rough) for my travel, as i am also flying out from bangkok on the 20th of december. So to start: i have two full months, i am a solo traveler, i generally enjoy less crowded, more scenic and remote places instead of big cities and crowds
I am an active person, so i would like places where i can meet up with other people and do treks or motorbike loops for example. PS: i own a light motorcycle ...
Just retired @ 60 so we have plenty of time but not heaps of cash.
I'm looking for some suggestions for laid back destinations that are cheap so we can stay there between other "must do" destinations. I guess flash packer describes us but a comfortable bed, fan & ensuite suit us. Beach is good but we also like the moutains and rivers. We are Australian if that matters.
Thanks in advance ...
The last Travelfish newsletter of 2016 - a year in review.
While we're yet quite ready to put a cork in what has been a bitter vintage of a year for many, the end of 2016 is on the horizon and this will be our last newsletter of the year. We're taking a bit of a different approach for this issue, looking back at the year that was. Thank you all for reading and see you in 2017.
Till next year!

I'm looking for a travel mate for SEA for January and February 2017. I have an open schedule at this point, and am looking for someone to meet and travel with. I arrive in Bangkok at the beginning of the year, and would like to start travels there onward. If there anyone is in the same boat and wants a friend to travel with, feel free to message me and we can chat! ...
I'll be travelling in south east Asia this year and am looking to stay at guesthouses that are doing interesting things within their communities...like supporting schools or clinics, or are social enterprises. Does anyone know of guesthouses like this? (In the budget price-range).
We featured this a few weeks ago in the Travelfish newsletter and have been meaning to post it here. So it seems James over at NomadicNotes has, it would be fair to say, an unhealthy interest in tube maps, train lines and SouthEast Asia.
Rather than go into therapy he decided to throw all three obsessions into a single monster map of all Southeast Asia's train lines - past, present, future and not in our lifetime (hopefully).
You can see a small version of the map below, but do head over to th ...
I've now gathered that proof on onward travel IS required when using the 15 day visa exemption to enter Vietnam, much like Vietnam and Myanmar.
Regarding Vietnam in particular, does anyone know if this proof can be a bus booking, or has it got to be a flight booking? I found on the Thailand embassy website that any method of departure is fine, but there must be a booking.
Only one site has suggested departure from Vietnam can be by any means. However, having emailed them, they a ...
My husband and I are travelling to SEA late December to late February. We fly into Bankok and stay for 2 days and then fly to Siem Reap for 3 or more days. From there we really haven't planned an itinerary but want to go to Laos, North Vietnam (spent 4 weeks in Vietnam but didn't make it to Sapa or Halong Bay) and possibly Malasia and Indonesia, also more time in Thailand. We're in our 60's and are back packing and staying at low to moderate level hotels and enjoy everything from beaches, bi ...
After spending 6 weeks in India last year, my girlfriend and I are looking to spend just over 7 weeks in SEA from 26th November - 15th January.
So far we have the following itinerary, and I would be hugely grateful for your advice.
We travel chiefly by air. Where this isn't possible, we will travel by night, unless the journey is short. In Vietnam, we will travel chiefly by train.
As the plans currently are, we will spend Christmas in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and NYE in Sih ...
December to January, my girlfriend and I will be travelling from Ho Chi Minh to Bangkok. As we're both students in our mid-20s budget is tight.
1. My first hopes were set on:
- 1-2 days Ho Chi Minh
-Cambodia (1.5 weeks),
-Laos, up north to Luang Prabang (2 weeks),
-Thailand (1.5 weeks)
However, after doing some research I concluded that this might be a bit ambitious. As said, our budget is tight so no flights or fancy fast buses. Both of us enjoy some slow travelling, seeing and e ...
Hi! I'm planning my second trip to SE Asia with my husband and need some help with some details of our itinerary, specially on transportation, best order between places and to decide our beach spot for the trip. We have a month and fly in and out of Hong Kong. On our first trip we did Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Chang in Thailand, Bagan and Inle in Burma and Siem Reap in Cambodia, plus a few days in Hong Kong. It was a great combination of nature, cool cities and history, Bagan was of our fav ...
Im a 24 year old student from Puerto Rico and around the beginning of March 2017 I will be traveling to SEAsia for the first time with one friend. We are completely open to anything, however we would like to incorporate the following in our trip but have had a difficult time arranging it logistically:

We've been running a quiz every week in our weekly newsletter, and have been meaning to post on the forum as well. So, better late than never, here is the latest quiz, and I'll update this thread every week with the new one. There is an alt link because the quiz script thingy doesn't work properly for a few people and haven't got to the bottom of why that is.
Can you identify these ten islands? (alt link here)
Good luck! ...
Me and my partner are travelling South East Asia for the first time and are setting off the beginning of January 2017. We will travel for roughly 3/4months and are flying from the UK.
I have been doing lots of research but I'm beginning to find it all a little overwhelming and scary.
We want to fly into Bangkok head north to Chiang Mai, cross over into Loas, then do Vietnam and Cambodia. We hope to come back into Thailand and visit some of the Thai islands before completing our trip.
From this week's newsletter:
The messages have begun: Do I really need to book a room at X on Y over the Silly Season or can I just show up? These questions pop up every year around this time as people start to make their Christmas and New Year plans, go to book a bed and find everything they want (or even don't want) is full. Panic!
I have a few thoughts on this, which I hope will help to calm at least some nerves.
Most importantly, despite online travel agents boasting that they list six sq ...
Hello, me and my friend are traveling from Brazil to Southeast Asia for 2 months. On the arrival we are planning starting from Camboja or Laos, making all the coast throught Vietnam. We are arriving in Bangkok, so we need tips for the start of the trip, where should we start? How and where can we get our visa on borders, if we cannot go throught airport. Which way should be the best, considering we are going to be in new years eve in Vietnam!
Thanks for all, I am really anxious haha ...
Im travelling in SE Asia in november. Im hoping ill figure my route out as I go (one of the appeals of traveling for me) but can anyone recommend a chilled out place to start that wont break the bank?
Im a sociable person but initially I don't want a party scene. A few bars etc so I can meet other travellers would be good but I'm not interested in getting wasted.
Basically all I need is a beach, wifi and a hostel where I don't have to share a room!
Hi guys, this may be a commonly asked question here but im looking for experience on the matter.
SO, in January I plan on buying a one way ticket to Bangkok and travel around south east Asia until I either get tired of the journey or when I run out of money.
Now, my problem here is what kind of problems will I run into with immigration, in the case that I wont have an exactly detailed plan on how long I will spend in each country. And I am not sure how it works with the different countries and ...
