Boats to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida depart from the beach at the end of Jalan Hang Tuah in the north of Sanur. To Nusa Lembongan a public slow boat departs once daily, and public speedboats more regularly. Tourist shuttle service, Perama operates a daily slow boat. Several speedboat operators have offices along Jalan Hang Tuah. Be wary of cowboys offering cheap prices.

Scoot Fast Cruise and Rocky Fast Cruises are two long established companies both run boats to Nusa Lembongan and the Gilis off Lombok. Maruti Express and Caspla Bali as well as a public boat operates speedboat services to Nusa Penida. Tickets should be purchased the day before departure where possible although this is not always necessary in quieter periods.

Note that all boats, both public and private depart directly from the beach, none use a pier — you will need to wade (generally up to about knee-depth, but sometimes more) up to the back of the boat and climb the steps into the boat. If you are mobility-impaired or not comfortable getting onto a boat in this manner, someone will need to carry you. In rough seas injuries do happen, so take care.

Sanur is a 30 minute taxi ride from the airport. The prepaid fare from the airport taxi booth is 150,000 rupiah, while a regular metered taxi should cost 80,000-100,000 rupiah depending on traffic. Drivers may use the toll route which will add 11,000 rupiah to your fare, but will save time in busy traffic. Metered and unmetered (bargainable rates) taxis ply for business up and down the streets of Sanur and also wait outside Hardy’s Supermarket and the Ex-Hyatt Hotel.

Getting around

Green bemos travel up and down Jalan Danau Tamblingan all day long and you’ll regularly be beeped at. The process for using the bemo is fairly simple. Stand on the side of the road and flag the bemo down and do not negotiate price as this will alert the driver to potential naivety. The fare to and from anywhere along Jalan Danau Tamblingan is 3,000 rupiah, but as a foreigner 5,000 rupiah will save arguments and you simply hand this correct change to the driver when you decide to hop off.
