Travelfish on Burma (Myanmar)

Posted by somtam2000 on 17/10/2008 at 09:24

I've just added a new section on the messageboard for discussion of Burma (Myanmar). This isn't to say we're planning on adding coverage of Burma to Travelfish, as we're not, but given there's the occasional post about it, it makes sense to have them all in one place for the benefit of all. If there are any Burma experts out there who'd be interested in putting together some kind of a Frequently Asked Questions thing on Burma to post here in the messageboard, please drop me a line at stuartmc ...

Burma travel FAQ

Posted by somtam2000 on 9/1/2013 at 21:10

This is a (very much work in progress!) collection of links to useful threads in the Burma section of the forum along with other parts of the site. We'll update it as more interesting or useful stuff appears. Currently there is no destination guide for Burma on Travelfish. If you know of another interesting resource worth adding, please mention it in the comments. Burma or Myanmar? Here at Travelfish we use Burma rather than Myanmar as does Aung San Suu Kyi, but there are many takes on it. Here ...

The Travelfish long read for December 2020 is out: Mandalay, Burma

Posted by somtam2000 on 2/12/2020 at 05:20

Early each morning Yin Yin Lwin walks the short distance from her Mandalay home to the moat surrounding the walls of the city’s Royal Palace, the grand structure that was built in the middle of the 19th century, and which remains the dominant edifice in Myanmar’s second biggest city. After arriving at the palace’s eastern wall, Lwin usually walks north, in the direction of Mandalay Hill, then onwards to the northwest corner of the palace, before returning home. This morning ritual usua ...

Drinking water

Posted by FFfietsen on 31/8/2019 at 15:37

Hi, last year i travelled Myanmar for 14 days. I did a foodtour in Yangon and our guide explained that authorities provide clean drinkingwater throughout the country. Often found on large containers, allthough sometimes in claypots. Next februar we will return to Myanmar by bicycle. My question. Is this provided water save to drink. Don't mind paying to buy water, but don't want to buy plastic bottles if i can avoid. ...

Visa Run at Mae Sot/Myawaddy

Posted by gatoguts on 9/5/2019 at 00:54

Is it possible to do a visa run from Mae Sot in Thailand to Myawaddy in Burma for 100 baht, 500 baht, like you can in Mae Sai/Tachileik? If anyone has done this, what is the cost, how long can you stay in Burma, and where can you go? Since it's a visa run, I also assume you can keep your passport. ...

On Burma

Posted by somtam2000 on 4/9/2018 at 20:47

From this week’s newsletter: Well, it has been a thoroughly depressing week on the news front in Southeast Asia, but I want to zoom in on the sentencing of the two Reuters journalists, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo to seven years in prison for this story. The trial has been widely reported as a farce and while people hoped the journalists would be freed, Burma has yet again opted to do the wrong thing. When Burma experienced its democratic gains five years ago there was considerable optimism about ...

Should tourists still visit Burma?

Posted by somtam2000 on 19/11/2017 at 19:59

An ABC piece by a journalist based in Burma asks the question “Given recent violence towards the country's Rohingya minority, should tourists still visit?” Kayleigh Long’s answer is “yes always yes, but with a few caveats” and the full story is worth a read. Towards the end of the story Long writes “The general view in the tourism industry seems to be that ordinary people whose livelihoods depend on visitors are being affected by a faraway conflict which they can do little about. ...

Hi, we are planning to do the 'Travelfish suggested'2 weeks in south burma itinery, as mentioned on: https://www.travelfish.org/trip_planner/2-weeks-southern-burma. We planned to travel southbound by bus, but reading the details on the travelfish writer's experience it looks very hard to get busses out of Ye and Dawei to travel further south to Myeik . Mandalay to Luang Prabang

Posted by jojowilliams on 10/9/2017 at 17:37

I am planning a visit to Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia for January, traveling a lot by train and not covering the same route twice. And I'd like to avoid Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur if possible, but it might be necessary to fly through one or both. All things considered I think I'd like to fly to Mandalay from Singapore, then overland to Yangon and fly from there to Luang Prabang , then overland to Vientane and elsewhere, or fly from Singapore to Vientane, overland to Mandal ...

Hi! I've been scrolling through the internet and started to wonder, if anyone could recommend a nice, peaceful place in Myanmar to spend a few days or so. I'll be traveling in Myanmar later this year, it'll be my second time, first being 7 years ago. Last time I skipped Inle Lake and had that in mind, but I would love to hear if anyone has any other places they would like ...
