The whole point of this thread: The price of taxis in Bangkok: Last weekend, this is what I paid for taxis in Bangkok. Revised comment policy on Travelfish due to the Thai coup

Posted by somtam2000 on 10/6/2014 at 07:46

As Travelfish regulars will be aware there was a coup in Thailand in late May and since then there has been a steady and relentless wind back on freedom of speech, freedom to gather in public, and, well, freedom in general. Earlier today, in the junta's infinite wisdom, they've decided to extend their grasp to the internet. As of today, according to this story on the excellent Prachatai website, "Thai police warned Thai Internet users on Monday that "liking" or expressing approva ...

Hi, I'm somtam2000 and I'll be moderating the Travelfish travel board. I'm here to answer all your questions -- or at least the ones I know the answer to -- as for those that are mysteries to me, perhaps other Travelfish members will be able to answer. You'll see you need to be a member to post a new question or answer an existing one, but if you're already a Travelfish member, you don't need to join again. Your existing login works just fine. A few of general pointers; 1) I do have t ...

Going to Ko Lipe

Posted by Dmar on 14/10/2021 at 14:07

Hello! I'm planning a 3 week vacation to Thailand in November. The last week I plan to go to Southern Thailand.  I have 6 days to get from Chiang Mai - down to the South - and then back to Bangkok (will by flying). Looking to snorkel and relax.  Right now, I'm looking at Ko Lipe and Khao Lak (with Similan day trip).  Leaning towards Ko Lipe for the snorkeling - but doesn't sound easy to get to(coming from Chiang Mai ). I'm also wondering about staying at the national park - ...

Mae Rim transportation options

Posted by Dmar on 14/10/2021 at 14:32

Hello,  I'm planning to stay at a Mae Rim hotel for 3 nights. Looking to relax, see the countryside, and hike.   How easy is it to obtain a taxi or shuttle from Mae Rim to different destinations (Doi Suthep, Chiang Dao caves, etc)? Is there a taxi or shuttle company the people would recommend?  The place where I'm staying charges a lot for shuttle services, so looking for other options.  David ...

Got the vaccine, thinking of going back to Thailand

Posted by ryanm24 on 21/3/2021 at 04:18

Hi all! This is my first post on this site in a long time, was super busy for a long stretch lol. Good to be back! My wife and I will be getting our second round of the vaccine soon and have been thinking we want to do a long stay in Thailand, 1-2 months. We read that there is a change coming in April that allows vaccinated visitors to only quarantine for 7 days. We are US citizens. Few questions: 1. What covid insurance are people recommending? I have used World Nomads in the past and their ...

How to learn Thai to communicate with locals, even small talks

Posted by jatintheexplorer on 5/1/2021 at 09:13

Hi group, I have been to Thailand three times from 2019 to 2020, and in my last trip I really felt that its very hard to communicate in English, especially if you are a business traveller. So after searching some videos on YouTube, buying some books on "How to learn Thai", I am convinced that all these things are scams, as you can't learn Thai Language in 3 months from any App, videos or especially not from a book. Some of my friends have suggested me to use Dulingo, but even this ap ...

Tourist Visas In Thailand

Posted by slimboytim on 25/5/2020 at 15:49

I wanted to touch on a topic that I often see people confused by, tourist visas (and other visa's in general). I see so much confusion about this topic out there online, and a lot of miss information too. I found this post on the topic of Thailand tourist visas a little while ago which has some great information and has helped me out a number of times, I also use the site to download my visa extension application forms and print them on the road which speeds up immigration processes for me. S ...

Andaman Sea vs the Gulf

Posted by chopin on 26/7/2020 at 12:32

Would like to know if we can only choose one: the west (Andaman Sea) or the east side (the Gulf of Thailand), which one offers the best in terms of: 1. White sandy beaches 2. Snorkeling (corals scene) (we can't dive, so diving is not our concern) 3. General scenery ...

How do I get from Buriram to Roi Et?

Posted by cardkleener on 14/12/2019 at 07:24

I'm looking to go from Buriram to Roi Et. I have searched numerous bus lines and cannot find a bus. The only way I found so far is. Buriram to Khon Kaen. Khon Kean to Roi Et. That makes it a very long trip. I know I could probably take a taxi but it could be very expensive. Any advice would be appreciated. ...

Firstly, do you have any experience of the following options in terms of comfort/cost: ferry-train-bus-ferry or ferry-minibus-bus-ferry Secondly, will I be able to book the whole trip in Langkawi, or will I have to navigate my own way between each step of the journey? Chumphon Night Market - worth a visit

Posted by exacto on 20/2/2020 at 04:13

If you find yourself in Chumphon going to/from Koh Tao or the other Gulf of Thailand islands, the regular night market along Krommuang Road east of the train station is absolutely worth a visit. It lines up on both sides of the street for a good kilometer or more, and has a wonderful mix of traditional Thai favorites, with an emphasis on Phad Thai; and modern new influences too, like churros. Market vendors were particularly fun and friendly, even by Thailand's usual fun and friendly standards ...

Watch for Falling Cashews!

Posted by exacto on 18/2/2020 at 02:59

I just spent four nights on Little Koh Chang in Ranong Province, Thailand. The island is a throw back to what I think of as the golden age of backpacking in the 1990's, when the norm was a bamboo hut right on the sand with cold water only showers and electricity from a generator for only a few hours each night. The sand isn't the best here, and the water isn't the clearest, but for aging boomers like me, this is a fun reminder of the good old days and a serious chance to relax. The four nigh ...

advice re: locations for working trip with good wifi and beaches for snorkeling

Posted by CarlRabeler on 2/12/2019 at 22:01

Hi all, I will be traveling to southeast Asia for a few months - I will be doing a bunch of writing that will require me to have good WiFi access for 5-6 hours a day (4-5 days a week), but I will be able to play, snorkel, dive, eat, listen to music the rest of the time. I am looking for recommendations for the Thailand and Malaysia areas (or other areas that you all might recommend). Thanks, Carl ...

Khao Sok tour help

Posted by bradpitch92 on 2/12/2019 at 03:12

My wife and I will be in Khao Sok for 3 or 4 days in February and we're struggling to find a good tour to go on. It appears most tours offer an overnight option in a barebones floating bungalow, but we'd like a little nicer overnight stay on the lake. What have people done to book these lake tours? ...

Honeymoon Itinerary

Posted by wscanl01 on 9/3/2020 at 16:28

Hi, my fiance and I are planning a 2 week honeymoon to SE Asia the first 2 weeks of November. We are looking for a little itinerary advice as this will be our first time in the area. Thailand is #1 on our bucketlist. I was thinking 1 week there and 1 week in Vietnam. Is this possible to do or not enough time? I figured 3 main stops around 4 days each makes the most sense. We would like at least 4-5 days on an island and some time to see the local cultures and try local food. Activities: S ...

Mask Wearing Trends in Mid-Peninsular Thailand February 2020

Posted by exacto on 18/2/2020 at 13:03

As a follow up to Stuart's Coronavirus update in today's (#375 on February 18, 2020) Travelfish newsletter, I've spent the last week in Ranong and Chumphon Provinces in the middle part of the Thai peninsula. Mask use is fairly sparse in these places. For the most part, I'm only seeing people who work with the public full time are wearing them, like the train attendant on the diesel rail car trip today. They were definitely more common on the flight from Bangkok to Ranong (sorry, Stuart, ...
