Ujung Genteng is a sleepy, unhurried coastal town on the southern shores of West Java. The name literally translates to “the end of the roof tile” due to the coastline’s resemblance to the decorative finials on traditional Indonesian houses, but we think it feels more like the end of the world.

More than 100 kilometres from the nearest city, Sukabumi, remote Ujung Genteng is the stuff dreams are made of, yet it attracts just a trickle of local visitors and a mere dribble of anyone you could describe as being foreign. Popularity is growing though (slowly) and it can get almost crowded on weekends and during holiday seasons.

The main reason foreign tourists visit this place is to surf Turtle’s break and the perfect curling waves at Ombak Tujuh, but apart from the draw of the surf, there is simply mile after mile of beautiful coastline. During low tide, the scene can look quite unimpressive, but as the tide runs in, it transforms into an ocean of aquamarine. Along most parts of the coast in this area, the water is quite shallow and it’s often possible to swim without feeling like you’re going to get sucked out to sea—though do still exercise care! Locals are happy to offer to take you out snorkelling the clear coral reefs but you’ll mostly need to bring your own equipment.

Ujung Genteng is one of the largest reserves for green sea turtles in South East Asia and near Turtle Beach a turtle conservation centre operates where you can see hatchlings released along with turtles nesting—a truly remarkable experience and not to be missed.
