Paying $$ to Volunteer? Usually not a good idea.
Hello, My name is Amanda. I am an American living in Phnom Penh, at an orphanage about 15k outside of the city. Myself and 3 other westerners (another American and 2 Australians) have raised money to completely support and run our center. Living here and seeing many orphanages that require you to pay to volunteer makes my stomach turn. These "fees" are meant to make you have peace of mind but are usually not used to support the children but to support high salaries and buy items that by most ...

New forum: Volunteering in Asia
A growing number of people are curious about volunteering in Southeast Asia. Curious about what is involved, what it costs and who are reputable organisations to volunteer with. So, here's a new section of the forum to discuss these matters. A couple of pointers: a) If you're undecided on the pay vs no pay debate, you should read this discussion. b) This is a forum for travellers to discuss the options -- not for volunteer organisations to spin their spiel. Solicitations and advertorial posts ...

Posted by mari111 on 21/3/2013 at 16:45Hi, I'm 23, I'm an ESL teacher, and I thought I'd like to spend a month or two volunteering in Thailand or Cambodia. Ideally, the school/volunteering organization would look like this: 1. Has other English speakers there (so I don't get lonely ) 2. Safe- I'm a solo female traveller 3. I wouldn't have to pay to volunteer- I'm on a low budget 4. Actually helps the people it's supposed to help! The more I read up on volunteer organizations in southeast Asia, the more it seems like they don't ...

We're going to travel for 6 months or so and really want to do some volunteering. We love children and animals and have good experience working with them. We can do longer stays, if we find the right place. We're both a little over 20 and stabile, warm people. It's out first time in Cambodia. And suggestions on where to go and what to do? Tha ...

Hi! My friend and I are planning on traveling to SEA next summer from around mid May to whenever my bank account hits zero. We realize we're not going at a 'prime' time in the season, but are willing to make it work out since this is the only available time we have to travel. We're both involved with wildlife conservation and were looking to check out some animal rehabilitation centers around the area. Our list of locations so far are: Bali, Singapore, Malaysia, Thai Islands, Thailand, India, M ...

Looking for a 3-months volunteering job without fees
Posted by N3sh on 10/1/2013 at 05:26Hello, I have just registered and I am here to ask help for searching for a volunteering job in Asia. I have researched a bit and I have noticed that almost all the projects I have encountered so far require me to pay a fee for participating. I am currently a student and that kind of money + travel expenses (flights for example) is far from my reach. Therefore I hope to find some opportunities where I get at least the accommodation and food while I work there. If you know something similar in ...

If I can't use these skills I would also be happy to volunteer my time teaching English or working in an orphanage or farm/conservation type project. Essentially I just want to challenge myself ...

Volunteer ideas for Architects & Design/Engineering professionals?
Posted by Pomsitong on 4/7/2012 at 13:58My partner and I are heading to Northern Thailand (most likely Chiang Mai) for several months, and looking for some ideas on volunteer opportunities. I was curious what other design professionals have found in SE Asia, as most of the opportunities seem to be around teaching English, caring for children, or wildlife conservation (all very interesting mind you!). With a technical architecture background (design, detailing, construction methods & administration, project management), I am looki ...

Volunteering at Care for Dog, Chiang Mai
Posted by Nola_Lee_Kelsey on 18/1/2011 at 16:10Hello, I run the volunteer orientations at Care for Dogs outside Chiang Mai. We welcome animal loving volunteers at the shelter and I train new folks on Wed from 10 a.m. until about 2. After that if you are animal savvy you can set your own schedule. There is no charge for our program. We just need more hands to socialize, walk, bathe, clean… Most important is giving the dogs enough attention and experience with different people that when they get adopted they do well around their new famili ...
